Team Racing Update
RYA National Team Racing Championships 2008 Midlands Qualifier (24th Feb)
Horning Sailing Club entered the Midland qualifier for this prestigious event, sailing against some of the top teams in the country such as West Kirby Sailing Club and Cambridge University.
HSC performed well, before going on to suffer a poor umpiring decision in the deciding race for the third and final qualification spot against Sheffield University. Unfortunately you have to accept these things as part of team racing, where all protest decisions are made on the water; so HSC finished a respectable 4th place out of 12 teams.
59th Wilson Trophy at on West Kirby’s Marine Lake (10/11th May 2008)
Horning Sailing Club were represented at West Kirby Sailing Clubs’ Wilson Trophy for the second year in succession.
This annual event, which first took place in 1947 is sailed in two-man Firefly dinghies, provided by West Kirby Sailing Club and various sponsors. The boats, which are matched trios of colour-coded dinghies, make spectating from the grandstand beside the Marine Lake easy, with expert commentary provided.
Racing starts at 8.00am, with 3 minute intervals between starts. Being drawn second start HSC raced the current world champions, New York Yacht Club Silver Panda at 8.03am. However, despite their best efforts they lost!
Overall HSC put on a reasonable account of themselves, winning 4/12 races.
After each of the 32 teams had sailed 12 races, the top eight teams took part in the quarter finals, with winners going through to semis, followed by finals. The winners were NYYC Silver Panda.
